Today I received an email from my Republican cousin in Chicago. She is a very strong Republican and I was surprised to hear she didn’t like any of the Republican candidates for President, and she thinks America is ‘going to hell in a basket’. So I felt I had to respond and cheer her up, because I have been feeling the same way about her Republicans (and some of the Democrats). Here is my email to her to cheer her up:

Dear Cuz,

Thought your email about politics was interesting; when I was teaching school, I taught kids government and history. Doesn’t that make me an expert? I can see you shaking your head, NO!

And, I know you think I am a dyed in the wool Democrat, but that is actually not true. In 2008 and 2012 I would have voted for President Obama if he had been a Republican, because I believe in most of the things he believes in. And I never expected him to win because he is considered a Black Man and at the time I thought America would never, ever elect a Black Man as President. Happily, I was wrong!

For 2016, my own choice would be Bernie Sanders for President, because he believes the same as I do, in regard to what is best for all the People; my choice would have been for Sen. Elizabeth Warren, but she does not want to run for whatever reason, and I respect her decision.

In all honesty, I would hate to be President, because it requires great sacrifice. I’m convinced President Obama will be overjoyed to be able to leave the Presidency in 2017. I notice how much the President has aged in 6 years.

I believe Sen. Warren could easily win the Presidency if she would run. Warren and I agree on what is best for the American People and I think she would stick to her guns and not bargain it away. Also I think it is time America had a woman President, and I would prefer it to be an exceptional woman like Sen. Warren, to be our first female President.

Unfortunately, there is no Republican that I could vote for President in 2016, with a clear conscience; and some of my favorite politicians were Republicans: Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Earl Warren. But, I don’t think Lincoln, Roosevelt or Warren would vote for any of the Neocon Republican candidates running for office today; also, I don’t believe today’s Neocon Republicans would vote for Abe, Teddy, or Earl. Of course, I would!

Sorry to have to tell you this but your Grand Old Party, the old Republican party has been taken over by the bad guys, the extremely wealthy John Birch Society members; the Birch Society does not use their name in doing their bad deeds and instead work through “Front Groups” like the Tea Party and the American Legislative Exchange Council, who are both financed by the Koch brothers, whose father Fred, was a founder of the John Birch Society. The JBS does not believe America is a democracy and they want to eliminate democracy from America.

Cuz, I agree with you about how terrible it is that members of our government are being bought and elections being bought; this is because of the Citizens United Decision by the Supreme Court majority, all of whom were appointed by Republic Presidents (2 by W. Bush, 2 by Papa Bush, and 1 by Reagan). I believe the decision is wrong, it has eliminated democratic elections in America, the decision was purely political and not Constitutional, and I believe it is just what the John Birch Society wanted. Draw your own conclusions.

Here is a quote from the John Birch Society Bluebook about democracy: John Birch Society Blue Book, p.124 ” . . . democracy is merely a deceptive phrase, a weapon of demagoguery, and a perennial fraud.” (Continued in Footnote 25, p. 136.) “Our founding fathers . . .visibly spurned a democracy as probably the worst of all forms of government.”

And it appears to me that the John Birch Society ideology has taken over your Republican Party. I have actually heard Republican Congressmen state that “America is not a democracy”, on TV. That is shameful.

As for your politics in Illinois lately, personally, I don’t like the Republicans or the Democrats. I particularly don’t like Rahm Emanuel, the mayor of Chicago; he is a terrible person, a bully, and thinks politics is a game and not a commitment. I was hoping he would be defeated but unfortunately it did not happen.

So I agree with you that America is going to hell, but for different reasons.

Those of us who study government professionally, believe that the ONLY reason for having a government is to do things for the people as a nation that they cannot do all by their self; things like the Post Office that is provided for in the Constitution Article I, Section 5, and highways, and public schools provided for in the Northwest Ordinance of 1785, and Social Security, Medicare, the Army, and Obamacare. (Republicans today disagree, of course, and I disagree with Republicans about this.)

Personally, I think the reason why America is so far behind other civilized nations in the world is the Republican opposition to anything run by the government.

In Europe, the government runs things like trains, telephone service, TV cable (through telephone service), and the Swiss post office is great, it is a bank and postal service and you pay all your bills at the Post Office (checking accounts are not used in Switzerland).

Also the Post Office delivers all their mail to every other post office in the country by bus, called the Post Bus, and those buses also provide transportation for people; so people who live in remote places can get anywhere they want to go because of the Post Bus. In America, if you live in the country you are stuck there unless you have a car, the car is running, and the creek don’t rise.

America’s Obamacare is just like Switzerland’s universal medical care, private companies, but required, and regulated by the government.
Obamacare copied the Swiss medical care program. The five years I lived in Switzerland I had their universal medical care and I received excellent medical care at a lower rate than I would have paid in America.

Republicans just don’t like the government providing and regulating services for the people and complain how can you pay for it; the answer is that you pay taxes to pay for it (nothing is free), and you save money because you have excellent transportation without having to have a car and car expense, and communication without paying profits to the private owner and haggling by competing telephone companies.

Americans pay more in taxes than anyone else, but it all goes to the military for atomic bombs and needles wars and none of it goes for the necessities of People.

If they wanted to, the American government could subdivide and sell off the Camp Pendleton Marine Base here in San Diego and pay off the National Debt.

Of course, Neocon Republicans think that is wrong and today’s Republicans think Benjamin Franklin, the first Postmaster, was a socialist because the government runs our post office. Sen. McCain keeps saying we should privatize the U.S. Postal Service.

Every other civilized nation in the world has a post office owned and operated by the government. I think our Constitutional forefathers were much smarter that today’s Republicans.

So, take my word for it, I’m not a dyed in the wool Democrat, and I would vote for Abe, Teddy, or Earl if given the opportunity.

And, oh yes, I know that America was intended to be and is a democracy, America is a democratic Republic.

Hope this email made you feel better; perhaps we can make America well in 2016 if we all unite and stay together!

Luvya Cuz!
