Here, for reader’s edification, is a letter to The Economist by our good friend Cy Chadley.

Cy expresses exactly the feelings of so many of us in America:

Editor, The Economist

Your leader Murder in Libya, September 15, fails to recognize that America has lost its credibility in the Middle East because of its support for Israel and for authoritarian regimes. People have seen from Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay and the many cases of rendition that the U.S. is just as likely to suppress dissidence, to fail to provide justice and to employ torture, as their own governments. The U.S. has consistently ignored the aspirations of the ordinary people who want a say in their governance, a fair distribution of their national wealth, elimination of corruption, and a better future for themselves and their children: Islamists of all stripes, like politicians everywhere, play on these desires to obtain popular support. It is going to take generations for the peoples in the Middle East to weave their way to democracy and we have no choice but to leave them to their own devices.

The U.S. has no special interests to protect in the Middle East; unlike the EU and China the U.S. obtains less than 15% of its oil from there and this quantity is diminishing rapidly. The U.S. has no greater responsibility than the nations in the region to contain the development of nuclear weapons in Iran. Nothing can be done to effect regime change in Syria without recognizing Russia’s special position there; the establishment of a no-fly zone should first obtain the blessing of the Arab League, then of the UN Security Council which would require Russia’s and China’s support as in the case of the Libyan intervention.

It is time for the U.S. to quit the Middle East in the same way as the Brits did years ago; the U.S. presence achieves nothing but opprobrium and is a drain on its treasure at a time when it can ill afford wasteful expenditure.”

Personally, in this time of national economic crisis, I do not believe that raising the national debt limit should be a partisan issue, with either party making demands; there is a patriotic responsibility for all members of Congress to agree to raise the debt limit immediately in these desperate times for working Middle Class Americans that constitute a vast majority of he people.

Government spending, is always a serious issue and a partisan one.  However, when you are the head of a family and you have no bread on the table, it is no time for the family to argue over whether or not to increase their debt problem by using their credit card to buy bread.

It ill behooves politicians to make demands for their vote to increase the National Debt when the common citizen is suffering grave financial distress and he will suffer the most if the credit of the nation fails. Politicians are fools for holding their constituents hostage.

Yesterday, I became concerned when I found that MSNBC had disciplined Ed Schultz for calling Laura Ingrahm of Faux News, a “Right Wing Slut”; Schultz was made to apologize and lose a week’s pay. He appeared to be sincere in his apology and will be absent from the TV screen for a week and not be able to call anyone anything.

But I was thinking, it is OK for me to agree with Schultz’s description and it is even OK if Schultz believes his own description was accurate, but he is not allowed by his network to express himself on that issue. Yet, Faux News is notorious for misrepresenting the truth and calling people who disagree with their ideology, all sorts of names that are well known to be grossly inaccurate.

So, one reason for my concern is because of all the name-calling Faux News commentators engage in, particularly calling my President Obama a Communist, a racist, a fascist, which are well recognized to not be true, and that is considered OK by Faux News.

Though, my major concern is that MSNBC was just allowed to be acquired by Comcast, which I consider to be another Faux News Lite. I am wondering if extremists like Murdoch and his ilk eventually will acquire all the nation’s networks and spin all the news to suit their ideological whims and there will be no differences of opinion left in America. This seems to be the direction that American extremists are going and eventually they expect that there will be no one remaining on TV to refer to Ingraham as a Right Wing Slut even if she is.

Frankly, I consider today’s Americans to be vastly uninformed about what is going on in the world, because I have long been of the opinion that the media in America are controlled by their advertisers and that they self-censor news to satisfy advertisers.

From 2000 to 2005, I personally lived in Europe and saw on TV News in Europe, all the things that Americans never saw. This was amazing for me, an American, to be out of America and looking in and seeing Americans denied the truth about world affairs. European commentators would actually announce that “these film clips will not be shown in America.” It was sobering for me to know that people all over the world, even Third World Nations, were seeing what I saw and yet no one in America, none of my friends or family, would ever see it.

When I came home to America for visits, people would say, “What do the Europeans know; their news is all censored and in America we have freedom of the press.”

Holy crap! That is disturbing!

It also is painful for me to hear duly elected Congressmen talking like babbling idiots, void of facts and irresponsible, and making up stories to make their self look good, when it is all a lie; all of this is broadcast on national TV.

Let me give an example of what I am talking about; it always amazes me that when I ask people in America if they know what bin Laden’s incentive was for his 911 terrorist attack, they don’t know. Yet it was published in the US Commission on 911 Report. You would expect Americans to know something like that. Even people in Third World Nations know but Americans do not.

The American people are totally bamboozled because they believe they have freedom of the press and therefore believe what they read in newspapers and hear and see on TV. They simply believe what they want to believe and ignore facts (of which they are unaware).

I have always wanted to be proud of America and Americans and now, through no fault of the people, America appears to be a land of ignorant boobs. It is embarrassing what the media has done to the minds of the people of America.

President Obama has not totally satisfied the constituency that elected him; probably no President does.

Usually a President picks up “obligations” in order to win an election; how else can a candidate win. Every candidate has to get elected before he can do anything.

President Obama’s big issue was universal health care; getting Health Care Reform into law put everything else out of the picture. President Obama’s universal health care plan did not satisfy all the proponents of universal health care, particularly because of the absence of a public option.

The Republican Party and the media perception that people opposed universal health care was utterly ridiculous; it was Obama’s advocacy of universal health care got him elected.

The most important opposition to the statute , of those who favored it,was that it lacked a public option and thus did not go far enough. Protests to the President’s Health Care Reform was totally contrived by Republicans and their Health Care Industry campaign contributors and other extremists that saw it as a threat to their exorbitant profits; of course the Koch brothers and he John Birch Society that created the Tea Party Movement opposed universal health care on an ideological basis.

Universal Health Care was a big victory but the President had to give up too much to get it passed. Ironically, Blue Dog Democrats were his worse obstacle.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was barely a victory for the President; Afghanistan and Gitmo were a disaster, and eliminating bin Laden was the President’s huge victory.

Continuing the Bush Tax Cut for the Wealthy was a big loss for President Obama; working Middle Class were not so concerned about their miserly tax cut; maintaining the Bush Tax Cut for the Wealthy was Damaging to President Obama despite the fact that the Republicans insisted on it in order to get Unemployment Benefits extended for the unemployed.

President Obama doesn’t seem to understand that working Middle Class are willing to sacrifice for their country.  However, wealthy Americans will not and the wealthy believe they “own” America; it increasingly seems the wealthy actually do own America and continuing the Bush Tax Cut for the Wealthy seemed to reinforce that idea.

Of course, President Obama had to appease too many politicians along the way, including Clinton Democrats. He had to “pay his dues” and in the process, President Obama got some bad advice.

The President Obama public school policy and his appointment of Secretary Duncan is horrible! Public school teachers across the nation are horrified. The policy plays right into the hands of opponents of public schools, like the John Birch society, who want to privatize the public schools.

As a liberal democrat, President Obama earns a C grade from me and all Republican candidates are much worse. The Republican Party has been taken over by the anti democratic John Birch Society and do not represent the working Middle Class that makes up a majority of the electorate.

Voters in America can never just vote for the their best candidate; more often, they can only vote against the worse.  That is the major drawback to America’s two party system requiring a majority of the electoral vote.

The other night I watched O’Donnell on MSNBC interview Condo Rice on his show. I remembered when the US 9/11 Commission Hearing found that Rice and Bush both ignored warnings from intelligence that 9/11 was going to happen. The Commission reported it but without assessing blame to either one; agreeing that blaming someone would not have accomplished anything positive, and I agreed to that.

However, when I watched the interview of Rice and the way she attacked O’Donnell over his questions, which I thought were not about her negligence but instead appropriate and allowing her to defend the Bush Administration behavior, I was appalled by her arrogance and ignorance on matters and frankly the nasty attitude that she expressed. Her answers were babbling and incoherent and she constantly attacked O’ Donnell for trying to get her to answer the question when she was preaching instead of answering. I thought his questions were respectful and deserving of an honest and serious answer.

Until then, I had respected Rice; now I feel she was actually always completely incompetent, frankly dishonest, and totally inadequate. Someone said she was the worse Security Adviser in history; I have to agree.

To think that Bush would have chosen her and then elevated her to Sec. of State based on her incompetence makes me realize that President Bush must have really deserved all the references to him as brainless and incompetent. This was truly a sad time in our history. When I look at the utter shattered reputation of America from those Bush years and I see the Republican devastation of American economy, unemployment, outsourcing of American production, and blocking of everything positive that President Obama has attempted since the end of the Bush Era, I seriously wonder if the American democratic Republic will ever survive?

Americans stupidly look at revolution against plutocracy and oligarchy in the Third World Nations of the Mideast and cannot see that those people are revolting against the same plutocracy and oligarchy that Americans have acquired right here in the USA. Evidently, intelligence and ingenuity no longer has a place in the USA.

Americans wildly and peacefully celebrated the killing of bin Laden and  yet Americans carrying guns and threatening placards protested Universal Health Care in the USA, the greatest social achievement in America in Modern History. Holy crap! Whatever happened to the American Spirit of ’76!

It is exceedingly strange that the ‘drill-baby-drill’ crowd do not understand that American oil cost the same money as Arab oil.    WTF?

Since the Oil Industry is so corrupt and climate damaging, the only future for humanity lies in the reusable sources of energy, water, air and solar and the technology.  America has all of this!

What is America waiting for?

The Oil Barons are passé, BUT THEY OWN CONGRESS!

America, take back your country, take back Congress. Vote out the toadies of the Oil Barons. By all means vote in 2012!

Holy crap I never once used a political parties name.  Guess that isn’t even important anymore.  No, it is!

There seems to be a debate about whether or not the mutilated body of a dead Osama bin Laden should be released for the public. Would it convince skeptic or would it enhance the dignity and reputation of the American democratic Republic; the answer is no to both considerations.

It is ludicrous to think that America would even consider releasing photos of the mutilated dead body of bin Laden at this time; it would only serve bin Laden’s memory as a terrorist martyr and intensify the Religious hatred that is currently raging in the world. Twenty years from now it would make no difference.

Releasing these grisly picture of bin Laden at this time would only serve the blood lust of America’s Holy Roller antagonists. If you listen to Franklin Graham , and these other American holy-roller antagonists you, can understand why 1.6 billion Muslims think America is waging a Holy Crusade against the world’s Muslims in a Holy War.

Franklin Graham and the John Birch Republicans are doing a disservice to the American democratic Republic by pursuing these oil wars by America’s Bush father and son Presidents as Holy Wars against Islam. These people portray Christianity to the rest of the world as an evil, aggressive, and arrogant religious cult. If ever the world will enjoy a period of world peace, this crap by Americas Christian holy-rollers has to stop.

Exhibiting pictures of the mutilated body of even an atrocious terrorist like bin Laden, who was responsible for killing hoards of Muslims as well as Christians but all under the pretense of defending Islam would be a mistake. President Obama announced bringing bin Laden to justice and his death as a routine matter of enforcing the laws relating to crimes against humanity; there is no justification for exhibiting grizzly pictures of the deceased. That would give the unfortunate appearance that America and America’s Christians were gloating and boasting.

Bin Laden was a bad Muslim just as Franklin Graham and his ilk are bad Christians. This American Holy war has got to stop! NOW!

Here are the words of Elliott Abrams, Republican Foreign Polity Adviser to former President Bush.

“President Obama will bask in the satisfaction of all Americans that justice has finally been done—

. . . It is therefore unfortunate that Mr. Obama seems to want more than that fair share the American people will naturally and rightly give him. His remarks last night were far too much laced with words like “I met repeatedly,” “at my direction,” and “I determined,” trying to take personal credit for the years of painstaking work by our intelligence community. Mr. Obama might have noted that this work began under President Bush, but as usual he did not.”

Elliott Abrams’ remarks, including President Obama “trying to take personal credit for the years of painstaking work by our intelligence community”, is despicable. Mr. Abrams obviously does not understand the significant difference between taking responsibility and taking credit.

This is so typical of the John Birch Republicans; the Bush Administration never took responsibility for their faux pas, like ignoring warnings of the 9/11 attack and lies of “weapons of mass destruction” not to mention the current Republican Economic Depression. However, former President Bush was all too eager to don a military fly-fly suit on an aircraft carrier and boast of victory ten years too soon under a “Mission Accomplished” banner.

In his announcement, President Obama simply reminded Americans of his campaign pledge to find and apprehend bin Laden, since President Bush had already publicly announced that “getting bin Laden was no longer important”, and President Obama made it justly clear that he had made “getting bin Laden” a priority of his Administration. President Obama made it perfectly clear that all credit should go to American intelligence and military, especially the SEALS, and he also made it very clear that if the Republicans want to criticize the operation, as Elliott Abrams is doing, then President Obama would be totally responsible because of his hands-on planning and decision making.

Elliott Abrams is a piece of John Birch Republican filth!

Something to think about for amusement while you are filling up at the gas station.

Does anyone else think this NATO/Libyan encounter is insane and senseless? Gaddafi’s son and grandchildren are now dead; what is the protocol, does NATO send condolences or celebrate?

What a crazy game, this spin-the-oil-well is.

In all honesty, Gaddafi is not responsible for me paying $4.27/gal. for regular in San Diego. The price of oil is not defined by Gaddafi OR a free market. The price of oil is decided by the people who have it, oil companies; you either pay their price or go without, there is no alternative.  Mobile Exxon made $10 billion the last quarter.

Here is something really hilarious. In Mexico, right across the border from San Diego, the Mexican government has nationalized oil production and the Mexican government subsidizes gasoline so poor Mexicans can afford it to drive to work for low wages working at an American manufacturing plant in Mexico.

Wealthy Americans drive their gas guzzling SUVs and Mercedes across the border to fill their tanks in Mexico where gasoline is cheaper because the government subsidizes it for the poor. Then the wealthy Americans drive back across the border to the US and vote Republican so that the American government will subsidize the oil companies.

The same wealthy Republicans also want to drill baby drill every inch of America and they know damn good and well that American oil is sold at the same price as Arab oil.

Are gasoline prices really President Obama’s fault? Donald Trump thinks so!  What the…….?

Holy Crap! Stop the world, I want to get off!

I have been severely castigated and called names at times because I have maintained that Americans are ignorant because the American media self-censors the news to please their advertisers and the US Government. Today, Sunday April 24, both the British Guardian and the New York Times, both privy to secret documents about Guantanamo Bay, wrote headline stories on the same subject. I would simply ask that people read both news stories and make their own decisions about self-censorship, however subtle.

Do you believe that Americans reading one version would react differently if they had read the other version?  Of course, what most Americans say is the America has freedom of the press and therefore you can believe American media and you can’t believe foreign news media. That’s B.S., I’m sorry.

From 2000 until 2005, I lived in Schaffhausen Switzerland and read foreign newspapers and American newspapers on the computer and I was horrified by the differences particularly regarding the war. Over the years since my return to America, I have ask many of my fellow Americans about specifics well known in Europe and find Americans are completely ignorant of those facts.

Here are the links for the same story:
